How Secure is Your Password?

Is your password strong enough to protect your accounts? This tool provides a quick assessment of your password's strength. It checks for common criteria such as length, the inclusion of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special symbols to give you a qualitative rating from 'Very Weak' to 'Very Strong'.

The Strength Formula Explained

The calculator uses a points-based system:

  • Length: Points are awarded for having more than 8, and even more for having more than 12, characters.
  • Character Variety: A point is awarded for each of the following character types found in the password:
    • Lowercase letters (a-z)
    • Uppercase letters (A-Z)
    • Numbers (0-9)
    • Symbols (!, @, #, $, etc.) The total score is then converted into a simple strength rating.

How to Use the Calculator

  • Enter Password: Simply type your password into the input field.
  • The calculator will instantly display a progress bar and a strength label (e.g., 'Medium', 'Strong').

Real-World Examples

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • What's more important: length or complexity? Length is the single most important factor in password strength. A long, simple password (like a four-word phrase) is generally much stronger and harder to crack than a short, complex one.
  • Is it safe to type my password here? Yes. This calculator runs entirely in your web browser. Your password is not sent over the internet or stored anywhere.
  • What's the best way to create strong passwords? The best modern advice is to use a long, memorable passphrase of 4-5 random words (e.g., blue-bottle-sunny-garden). This is both extremely strong and easier to remember than a complex string of characters. For all your other accounts, use a password manager to generate and store unique, long, random passwords for each site.
