Understanding Your Body Mass Index (BMI)

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used measure to gauge whether your weight is healthy in proportion to your height. It's a simple, indirect measure of body fat. While it's not a perfect diagnostic tool, it is a reliable indicator for identifying weight categories that may lead to health problems.

The BMI Formula Explained

Our calculator allows you to use either metric or imperial units:

  • Metric Formula: BMI = weight(kg) / [height(m)]²
  • Imperial Formula: BMI = (weight(lbs) / [height(in)]²) * 703

The factor of 703 in the imperial formula is a conversion constant to ensure the results are consistent across both systems.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Select Units: Choose either the Metric (cm, kg) or Imperial (ft/in, lbs) tab.
  2. Enter Your Height: Input your height in the appropriate fields.
  3. Enter Your Weight: Input your current weight.
  4. Calculate: The calculator will display your BMI score and the corresponding weight status category (Underweight, Normal, Overweight, or Obese).

Real-World Example

Metric System: A person who is 175cm tall (1.75m) and weighs 70kg.

  • BMI = 70 / (1.75 * 1.75) = 70 / 3.0625 = 22.9 This person has a BMI of 22.9, which falls within the 'Normal weight' range.

Imperial System: A person who is 5 feet 9 inches tall (69 inches) and weighs 160 lbs.

  • BMI = (160 / (69 * 69)) * 703 = (160 / 4761) * 703 = 23.6 This person has a BMI of 23.6, also in the 'Normal weight' range.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Is BMI an accurate measure of health? BMI is a good screening tool for the general population but has limitations. It doesn't distinguish between fat and muscle mass. Therefore, very muscular individuals (like athletes) may have a high BMI but low body fat. It should be used as one of several health indicators.
  • Is the BMI calculation different for men and women? No, the BMI formula is the same for adult men and women. However, healthy body fat percentages do differ between sexes.
  • Does age affect BMI? For adults, the standard BMI categories do not change with age. However, for children and teens, BMI is interpreted using age- and sex-specific percentile charts.
  • What should I do if my BMI is high? If your BMI is in the overweight or obese category, it's a good idea to consult a healthcare provider. They can assess other health markers and help you create a plan for diet and exercise if needed.
