What is a Healthy Weight for You?

This calculator provides a healthy weight range for adults based on height. It works by calculating the weight range that would put you in the 'Normal' Body Mass Index (BMI) category (18.5 to 24.9). This range is a more realistic and healthier goal than a single 'ideal' weight, as it acknowledges that healthy bodies come in different shapes and sizes.

The Formula Explained

The calculator uses the BMI formula in reverse to find the weight range corresponding to the healthy BMI range.

  • Minimum Healthy Weight: 18.5 * height(m)²
  • Maximum Healthy Weight: 24.9 * height(m)²

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Enter Height: Input your height in feet and inches.
  2. Calculate: The tool will display your healthy weight range in pounds (lbs).

Real-World Example

A person is 5 feet 7 inches tall (67 inches).

  • Height in meters: 67 * 0.0254 = 1.7018 m
  • Minimum Healthy Weight: 18.5 * (1.7018)² ≈ 53.6 kg or 118 lbs.
  • Maximum Healthy Weight: 24.9 * (1.7018)² ≈ 72.2 kg or 159 lbs.
  • Their healthy weight range is approximately 118 - 159 lbs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Why use a range instead of a single number? A range accounts for natural variations in body composition, like muscle mass and bone density. An athlete and a sedentary person of the same height can both be healthy at different weights within this range.
  • Does this calculator work for children? No. This calculator is for adults. For children and teens, weight should be assessed using age- and sex-specific BMI percentile charts. Use our BMI for Children Calculator for that.
  • What if I'm outside this range? Being outside the healthy BMI range is associated with increased health risks. If you are concerned about your weight, it's always best to consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice.
