Know What You Need to Succeed

Take the stress out of finals season with this calculator. It tells you the minimum grade you need to score on your final exam to achieve your target overall grade for the course. It helps you set a clear goal for your final study sessions.

The Formula Explained

The calculator rearranges the weighted average formula to solve for the unknown final exam grade. Required Score = [Target Grade - (Current Grade * (1 - Final Weight))] / Final Weight

  • Target Grade: The overall course grade you want to achieve (e.g., 90% for an A).
  • Current Grade: Your current grade in the class before the final exam.
  • Final Weight: The percentage that the final exam is worth (e.g., 0.30 for 30%).

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Current Grade (%): Enter your current grade in the class.
  2. Goal Grade (%): Enter the final grade you are hoping to get in the class.
  3. Final Exam Weight (%): Enter how much the final exam is worth as a percentage of the total grade.

Real-World Example

  • Your Current Grade in the class is 85%.
  • You want to get at least a 90% (an A-) in the class (Goal Grade).
  • Your final exam is worth 30% of your total grade (Final Weight).

Calculation:

  • Required Score = [90 - (85 * (1 - 0.30))] / 0.30
  • Required Score = [90 - (85 * 0.70)] / 0.30
  • Required Score = [90 - 59.5] / 0.30 = 30.5 / 0.30 ≈ 101.7
  • You would need to score at least 101.7% on the final to get a 90% in the class. In this case, an A- is likely out of reach.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • What if my current grade doesn't include all my assignments? You should first use our Grade Calculator to find your current weighted average based on all the assignments you've completed so far.
  • What if the result is over 100%? This means that even with a perfect score on the final, it's mathematically impossible to achieve your target grade. You may need to adjust your goal.
  • What if the result is a negative number? This is great news! It means you have already achieved your target grade, even if you were to get a 0 on the final exam.
